ALAN JOHNSON'S PRIVILEGE, POWER, AND DIFFERENCE Alan Johnson depicts many issues throughout his writings particularly trouble of differences in our society relating to gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and social class. Alan Johnson speaks on how humans fear the unfamiliar and these type of fear based issues are learned behaviors. The main idea and takeaway that I felt capture Johnson's writings is that these societal issues are based upon lack of awareness and a fear of difference, which creates these societal divisions. Just like Johnson says it is not being different that is the problem, it is the way these issues are presented and the assumptions that come with them. Discrimination is complex, uncomfortable, devastating, but most of all it is heavy. The fear behind what makes us different is the source of our societal problems.
